The fun part when you get to ink your own work...like walking a tightrope, a slip means disaster on colored paper as white out can't correct an errant black ink line...well not without a lot of effort. I usually start with the most important part of a portrait--the eyes and move on down...

I spend ages on the pencils and then basically trace over that with the inks. I'm too afraid of mistakes.

hah, it's the same process I do. Eyes are pretty important for me because they set the tone in my works. And YES, I totally understand the delicate nature of inking. Old-school inking is a lot more complicated than just using levels/curves in Photoshop. It's a skill that only the brave can do. O___O

Also, many thanks for putting comments on your pics. :boogie: I'm always disappointed when many artists here in DA just post their pics and not tell us the thought process behind it.

It's odd when I hear people say they start with the eyes first...when i do a pic the eyes are the LAST thing I draw in on the final pic...

I feel the exact same way - the eyes are the most important part, and where I start as well. If you screw up the eyes, no reason to continue with the piece.

It's good to hear I've got that in common with the great Jim Lee...

I'm always impressed at people who can start inking with barely a penciled line to guide them. It's one leap of faith that gives me cold sweat.
And it's perfectly balanced too...
